hi,

there are some initial thoughts on the role of metadata profiles and
metadata editing environments within a registry-enabled data delivery
environment here:

https://www.seegrid.csiro.au/twiki/bin/view/AppSchemas/VocabularyBindingMechanismsWorkshop

even those these arent yet fully cleaned and ready for "prime time", I have
made the call that we should at least be thinking about the difference
between metadata-generated-as-part-of-a-coherent-strategy and
metadata-generated-post-hoc.

Post-hoc metadata has never been much fun for anybody, nor particularly
effective in realising interoperability of data services or even detailed
documentation about data. The EU SDI (INSPIRE) is looking at a data product
specification -driven approach, and hence any investment we make should be
relevant in that arean IMHO.
