Regarding the conference logo:

I think we should consider the following when it comes to the logo:

1. The conference theme - 'user driven'
2. Key concepts that logo designers might 'hook' onto i.e. 'the gathering of the tribes', 'geospatial' , FOSS etc
3. A logo should have impact
4. Simplicity - keeping it simple will help its impact
5. Make sure it works big and small - an over complicated logo might become clumsy when scaled
5. I think a simple image/silhouette of the opera house is instantly recognisable as both Sydney and Australia.
6. I agree entirely with the suggestions so far about weaving in Aboriginal designs into the logo - not only do they provide identity but they add to the impact of the logo.
7. The ribbon (or whatever it is?) has been used for both 07 and 08 - should we continue its use, what is it, what does it symbolise?

Also when Tour Hosts are creating the logo - it may be worth specifying formats that we might need for printed media, website, email footers, a black and white version, a vector version that can be scaled well, a version with transparency
Aust-NZ,
Anyone have ideas re the FOSS4G conference logo?
The key messages that would be good to show graphically are:
1. Australian (or Sydney)
* Kangaroo
* Opera House
* Harbour Bridge
* Surfing (noting our beaches)
2. Geospatial
* OSGeo logo at http://www.osgeo.org/logos/
Full colour logo
* Compass
* Globe
* Map of Australia
* Map with pin on Sydney
3. Open Source
* Tux Penguin
http://www.jtpowlette.com/
<http://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://www.jtpowlette.com/tux1.gif&imgrefurl=http://www.jtpowlette.com/&h=360&w=327&sz=14&tbnid=R9FwtgLWYOsJ:&tbnh=121&tbnw=110&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dtux%2Bpenguin&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=1&ct=image&cd=1>

Maybe we could base the logo on the Australian Coat of Arms, which
includes a Kangaroo and Emu around a shield.
http://www.answers.com/topic/australia
<http://www.google.com.au/imgres?imgurl=http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/7/78/Australian_Coat_of_Arms.png&imgrefurl=http://www.answers.com/topic/australia&h=608&w=788&sz=640&tbnid=RdcH8LBgGW8J:&tbnh=110&tbnw=143&prev=/images%3Fq%3Daustralian%2Bcoat%2Bof%2Barms&sa=X&oi=image_result&resnum=1&ct=image&cd=1>
We could replace the emu with a penguin, put the OSGeo logo in the
shield, and simplify some of the other graphics.

I'd like to have all comments in by Friday morning, so that we can make
a decision on Friday.
