[OpenLayers-Users] Counting TMS tiles

For those in both groups, please forgive the post to OpenLayers and
Mapnik lists.

I'm trying to calculate the number of tiles in an OpenLayers TMS layer,
created with generate_tiles.py (SRS = Spherical Mercator) and Mapnik. I
would be starting with a lat/lon (WGS-84) bounding box. I was hoping
someone may have already done this before, before I start picking
through the Python script. Is it true that each zoom layer has 4 times
the tiles or the previous?
