[OpenLayers-Users] How can I change the displayed units of my scale control from 1:1M to 1:1000000

For OpenLayers. Control. Scale the openlayers documentation states:

The Scale control displays the current map scale as a ratio (e.g.  Scale = 1:1M)

It appears that my scale control is at a scale of 1:1M.

How can I change the displayed units of my scale control from 1:1M to 1:1000000
