[OpenLayers-Users] Vector Feature Popup without select?

I am researching how to add an onClick event to a point feature on a vector
layer to generate a pop-up or add it to selection based on a toolbar switch.

As far as I can tell, the only method of launching pop-ups on vectors is to
use feature selected? What if I want to select the feature (add it to a
selection layer) without launching a pop-up.

Markers is the old approach bit it seems straightforward to add an onClick
handler to a marker. Can't say the same for a vector point layer or am I
missing something?

Appreciate any guidance.
