[OpenLayers-Users] Layer remains after map is hidden

I am trying to work with two different maps. When a jQuery UI tab is clicked
map1 and its container are hidden and map2 and its container is shown. Map1
and map2 both have different layers and everything seems to be working
except that the user layer of map1 will not go away (even though the map has
gone) and if I click on map2 changes take place on the map1 user layer. I
can force the map1 user layer to go away with /this.map1UserLayer = "";/ but
that seems to be a bit drastic.

Why isn't the layer hidden with the rest of the map object?

Thanks in advance for an help.

Steve.
