Well, the message you are responding to has one big clue - use 
SLDSelect. In general you should use WMS wherever possible. Browsers are 
just plain slow. If you absolutely have to use WFS, then make sure you 
only request the essentials. New versions of WFS support paging which 
might help. The worst for WFS is detailed geometry - lots of vector 
information which is slow to pass through the network and then slow to 
parse. This is definitely the situation to use SLDSelect but note my 
warning about geoserver with this. Doing the conversions to server SRS 
on the browser is pain but much faster than parsing a complex vector stream.
