Have you defined the visibility scale threshold correctly for that GeoTiff?  Large scale mapping is no good at small scales, if you require this, then I would suggest you use a tile cache like GeoWebcache.

That is a pretty good question.  I am trying to determine this by looking at the network tab in Google Chrome developer tools.  And definitely my raster layer is the slow poke.  It is a GeoTiff grid that is fairly large and I am serving it through WMS.  I did change the buffer to 0 and that seemed to speed things up a bit.  Any other tips are appreciated.
