Sorry, I guess I should have looked at the console before, but just now 
the console in Chrome's debugger displays this message when I click on 
the line string drawn by the KML layer:

"event.layerX and event.layerY are broken and deprecated in WebKit. They 
will be removed from the engine in the near future."
