[OpenLayers-Users] Geometry field name

make a describefeaturetype call
eg
http://yourserver/geoserver/wfs?service=WFS&request=DescribeFeatureType&version=1.0.0&typename=yourprefix:yourfeaturename

and parse the response looking for|type="gml:something" in the 
attributes. A field with a type beginning with gml will be a geometry.
