I was specifically after post code searching since buying the post code database from Royal Mail costs an arm and a leg and there are limits to the number of searches you can do on their own database. The reason I was wondering if it can be included in OpenLayers is because if not then I will have to load the OpenLayers code file AND the OpenSpaces code file just to be able to get at the one function I want. I suppose I could dig around and try to find the actual web service address and then implement it myself but I thought I'd best check that nobody has already done it first.

why would you want that? The OS tiles are set up as a WMS which you can read
with OL just like any other WMS - although you need a valid key to access.
The OpenSpace api is based on OL (as is the French IGN's api), and released
under a BSD licence, so you can change it if you want. There's nothing in the
OpenSpace T&C that says you have to use their api to access the OpenSpace
services.

See discussions on this subject on the OpenSpace forum.

Going slightly off-subject, I'm seeing increasing use of open-source software
by the national mapping agencies in Europe - not just OL, but mapserver,
tilecache too. Seems like they have to consider open-source software to meet
the objectives of the EU's INSPIRE project - without breaking the bank.
