I can display my own base layer in EPSG:4326 without a problem.,
but one thing is bugging me. The coordinates from my baselayer
in EPSG:4326 <br>

I thought wgs84 was in deegrees, so why are these in meters?<br>

Your baselayer is not in 4326. It would display okay, because you
are telling geoserver it is 4326 and openlayers it is 4326 so no
reprojection required. You need to find out what the coordinate
system of your baselayer really is.<br>
