Thank you Frank and Jeff for your great responses, It's all clear to me now.
Just to clarify things for Frank (off-topic):

With the -q switch along with -l and -L it should be possible to install
precompiled set of packages for example from a CD or flash disk without
going through the gui and without need for internet connection. It is
covered at
http://trac.osgeo.org/osgeo4w/wiki/FAQ#HowdoIperformanofflineorcomputerlabinstall
and more in detail in the link to the QGIS blog there.
It would be great way for doing repeating installs like when installing a
bunch of software in a computer lab at school (exactly what I'm trying).
Unfortunately, with the -q switch used as described in the FAQ, the
installer always crashes (although I had irregularly a few successful
attempts back a year or so ago). Tested on two my machines and on one
computer lab machine, all with Win XP Home or XP Pro. In fact it seems it is
not the -q switch what triggers the crash, but the local install method -L
or --local-install - it triggers crashes even when used with -a instead of
-q.
Best regards,
