[OSGeoLive] OSGeoLive starting build cycle for OSGeoLive 15.0

I'd suggest looking at the live-build debian package (which is also available in Ubuntu).  It can build an iso/usb hybrid boot image (with optional installer), supports a persistence file on USB, and doesn't seem to have a 4GB limit on the squashfs root.  Input is essentially a list of packages to install and a set of files to overlay, so I don't think transitioning to it (or just using whatever it does for the final step of building the image) would be too hard.

If we went with USB only, the persistence file and squashfs root can be on separate partitions from the FAT32 partition (although not on a DVD).
