Why don't you get through your mountain of work, then get back in
touch when you are ready to start trying out the build process for
poseidon, and I'll support you to get it working.<br>

<br>
I'm delighted to hear that you are still driving Poseidon
project along.<br>
And very excited by the possibility of sharing our core
development
work, and then creating customised release distributions
which use the
same core.<br>
<br>
What this would mean practically:<br>
1. You would identify the packages that you would like
installed in
Poseidon, then create your own install master install
script (which
calls the individual package scripts).<br>
See: <a moz-do-not-send="true"
class="moz-txt-link-freetext"
href="https://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/livedvd/gisvm/trunk/bin/main.sh">https://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/livedvd/gisvm/trunk/bin/main.sh</a><br>
<br>
2. Write Documentation - our project overviews and
quickstarts are
currently being translated into German, Italian, Spanish,
Greek and
Japanese.<br>
<br>
3. For any applications which we don't have an install
script for, you
(or someone else) would need to write an installer.<br>
Example here:
<a moz-do-not-send="true" class="moz-txt-link-freetext"
href="https://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/livedvd/gisvm/trunk/bin/install_udig.sh">https://svn.osgeo.org/osgeo/livedvd/gisvm/trunk/bin/install_udig.sh</a><br>
More detailed instructions here:
<a moz-do-not-send="true" class="moz-txt-link-freetext"
href="http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Add_Project">http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Add_Project</a><br>
<br>
4. We would then run the main.sh script on a clean Ubuntu
distribution,
and create an ISO.<br>
Detailed instructions here:
<a moz-do-not-send="true" class="moz-txt-link-freetext"
href="http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Build#Creating_the_GIS_Virtual_Machine">http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Live_GIS_Build#Creating_the_GIS_Virtual_Machine</a><br>
<br>
It may seem a lot to digest up front, but I'm very
confident that once
you get the hang of the process, you will find it
significantly easier
than doing it all by yourself, and you will be able to tap
into a very
extensive community of developers who are working on this
with us:<br>
Roughly:<br>
* 3 core packagers<br>
* another 5 or so non-core packages and testers who help
out sometimes<br>
* around 25 to 30 people who specifically work on
packaging, testing
and debugging their specific project install scripts and
documentation.<br>
* around 10 translators<br>
<br>
Why don't you have a quick look at the links above, then
decide whether
you would like to base poseidon upon these packaging
processes.<br>
<br>
If so, then we can work together to try creating an alpha
poseidon
release and test the release process for you. (I think
after you have
done it once, with our help, you will be convinced that it
will be
easier than doing it the old way). Working together I
expect we should
be able to get something going in under a week's effort.<br>

<div>Also, Hamish suggested me to include the sample

agreed. Actually, I
think that since Poseidon has now two variant: full
version and the MB
System one (plus QGIS, </div>

some kind
"classroom" version, with lots of sample data and
documentation, and
maybe this help OSGeo as well.</div>

<div>Yes please, provide me the scripts. Maybe we can

<div>Actually, I'm not against getting closer to OSGeo,
is just that
I'm the only developer on Poseidon, and like an old
man (I'm only 35) I
tend to stay with what I already know. :-)</div>
<div><br>
</div>
<div>Also, I'm pooling with some people to have Poseidon
available on
every big research vessel because of MB

planning some tutorials for MB System (which I already
have done), but
also some integrating it with GMT, GRASS and QGIS (to
be done).</div>

Christian,<br>
I keep seeing your name and the poseidon linux
distribution popping up
in various places, and this has prompted me to
touch base again to see
if we can help you build your next poseidon
linux distribution.<br>
<br>
(Are you considering putting out further
poseidon linux distributions?)<br>
<br>
Here at the OSGeo-Live project we are running
into a problem with space
on the DVD. Soon we won't be able to fit all
applications onto the DVD.<br>
<br>
So what will be important is to be able to
create specific targeted
distributions for specific domains, and I think
that Poseidon Linix
would be a very good version.<br>
<br>
What we can do is provide the core distribution
though our build
scripts, which you can use as a basis. You can
then value add by
selecting the applications you wish to install,
then applying any
customisations you may think is required.<br>
<br>
Is this of interest?

all,<br>
<br>
<br>
Poseidon is going to be updated to
Ubuntu 9.10. The work is on the way.<br>
<br>
Actually, I have two versions nearly
100% ready based on Ubuntu 9.04.
But took me so much time, that now this
Ubuntu has just less than 1
year of security updates, so I decided
for giving up. So, these
Poseidon will never be released.<br>
<br>
The problem, is that Poseidon since from
the beginning, Poseidon is a
distro of a man alone. The team help
with the website and sometimes
writing documentation... but, the distro
related work is done just by
me.<br>
<br>
So, sometimes with the cruises, work and
family is hard to find tons of
time to produce real polished and good
Poseidon release.<br>
<br>
Anyway... I new version is under
construction... Actually, I am
preparing first a minimal version of
Poseidon Linux just with the GIS
and MB System. This will be ready until
end of December (I will work
during Xmas hollidays on it).<br>
<br>
Well, I'm always glad to have help or
ideas... <br>
<br>
Unfortunately, Poseidon Linux doesn't
has the infrastructure necessary
to be a internet shared project. And I
never could find the resources
to do so.<br>
<br>
PS: Please, Hamish and others... in the
future (if possible), write me
just to this email... the "chris for
lists" email gets dozens of emails
(and I use filter that sort them), so
any personal mail is not filtered
and may get lost among them.<br>
