A proposed talk on OSGeo-Live was not ranked high enough to be
included in the FOSS4G-NA line up.
I'd be interested to hear suggestions on what we can do to ensure
this presentation is ranked higher.

I personally think that the OSGeo-Live DVD and accompanying
presentation is hugely valuable, especially for new users to
Geospatial Open Source. (At FOSS4G 2009, for which I have metrics,
I'd classify half the attendees as new users). But it is very likely
that I'm biased.

What can we do to make the OSGeo-Live presentation more attractive?
* Are there ways in which we can improve the presentation?
* Should we spice up the abstract?
* Should we encourage the non-technical silent majority to vote on
abstracts?

Here is Paul's feedback from the FOSS4G-NA ranking process:
cutoff level (rank 51) 25% expressed interest, so not much difference
there, but significant difference in high level of interest, only 33%
ranked it as a '2' instead of a '1' and most talks floated around a
50% high interest level.

And Alex's proposed abstract:

Here's the abstract I based on Cameron's but attempted to gear it
towards the expected audience of gov/ngo participants at FOSS4G NA - ie
people newer to the OSGeo realm, though I did also put a twist in that
established projects/vendors could use it to market themselves. Can't
recall which title I used (probably the 3rd).

Want to learn how to leverage OSGeo-Live for your organization? Come hear about current applications included in OSGeo-Live and ways to use it for training, demonstration, outreach, and as a platform to deploy desktops and servers with open source geospatial software.
Full Length
----
This presentation provides a lightning overview of the breadth of quality geospatial open source applications, which are available for the full range of geospatial use-cases, including storage, publishing, viewing, analysis and manipulation of data.
In addition to covering the contents of OSGeo-live, the talk will outline several common use-cases based on existing deployments, an overview of the community and the future possibilities of the project.
OSGeo-Live is a self-contained bootable DVD, USB thumb drive or Virtual Machine, based on Xubuntu, which includes close to 50 of the best geospatial open source applications pre-configured with data, project overviews and quick-starts, and translations into multiple languages. It is an excellent tool for demonstrating geospatial open source, in tutorials and workshops, or as a test product for potential new users.

I've previously created a generic version of the abstract here:
