Thanks Hamish for taking the time and sending all the detailed
comments.<br>

I think it will be worthwhile to polish the script, incorporating
the issues you brought out, and keep it around. Even tho' hand
compiling is certainly less desirable than installing ready-made and
supported packages, we might have this as an interim option, keeping
new versions of spatialite on-board, until the UbuntuGIS *.debs get
up to speed.<br>
