<div dir="ltr"><div><div><div><div><div><div><div>Hi guys<br><br></div>I have been following the development of this project for a couple of years now, and was especially happy to see a 64 bit version, as one of my most used applications is Opticks, as that is only available as 64 bit.<br><br></div>I personally would welcome "forks" based on other Desktop environments, as I particularly like KDE<br><br></div>I would like to volunteer attempting to test the feasibility of using KDE. (Kubuntu)<br><br></div>On a side note, I have been using Gentoo for ages, but have recently switched to Arch Linux, as it gives me greater freedom in what I choose to include, and to compile the apps that I want. The last few months I have spent using GIS software on Arch, and was really impressed of what can be done!! For OSGeo-Live, we only support one desktop manager, primarily as
reduces the amount of testing required in getting the release out.
Lubuntu is the desktop we use because it is small and we try to
keep the size small enough to fit on a DVD.

We'd be happy to see another distribution supported as a branch,
but I expect it will be quite a bit of effort. Volunteers are
always welcome.

During the build procedure we customize the desktop environment in
order to add the geospatial menu, the desktop items etc. We do not
do this customization on the packaging level: we do not produce
derivative deb files of LXDE.<br>

Instead we execute:<br>

which customizes the desktop post-install.<br>

To achieve what is suggested here would require us to fork debian
packaging of other desktop environments (GNOME, KDE etc) and make
sure that all applications work fine on those environments.<br>
From my experience, every major GNU/Linux distribution has a
dedicated team of maintainers for each desktop environment
supported.<br>
