[Oskari-user] Discussion channels for Oskari

Hi,

From my perspective the discussions are mostly direct messages/emails for support and when there's some clear issue it has been posted as a GitHub issue directly. Some discussions have migrated to NLS Rocket chat as many in the community have accounts there as well and it's easier to use one platform instead of hopping between apps (imagine messaging with the same person but sending every other message through FB messenger and every other through LinkedIn). That being said it's a problem for new users that don't have the history and are only there because of Oskari.

In my opinion there's also a challenge in understanding if something is related to Oskari as software OR related to the service that's providing for example an embedded map functionality using Oskari OR related to something like map tiles not loading or search not giving results (usually not Oskari related, but an issue in the search backend that the Oskari-powered service is using to provide search-functionality). So it's also easier to ask in a chat that has both the Oskari software people AND the people that's offering the Oskari-powered service (and also some of the people providing the SDI services). So that's the problem as I see it (+ a few language barriers). As for how to "fix" it so Oskari could have it's "own" community... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Maybe we could move some of the Oskari related stuff back to Slack/Gitter from NLS rocket chat and try to get the service providers there as well for answering questions not directly concerning Oskari as a software.

I tested Gitter a year or two ago and the mobile app was abysmal at that time compared to what we had on Slack and the desktop experience wasn't really any better in my opinion. So there's been a oskariorg-chat in https://gitter.im/oskariorg for some time already. Now that I logged in I can see there's a couple of PSC members in there as well, but I don't think there has been a single message sent through Gitter in the oskariorg "rooms/channels/conversations" ever :)

There's a bunch of tools that allow Slack invites to be automated so that's something I'd like to advance. So we could set up an autoinvite funtionality in oskari.org. But if the majority want's to use Gitter I'm ok with that as well. Maybe they've even improved the functionality or atleast you can now sign in with twitter as well and not just GitHub credentials (that was an issue back in the day since most of the non-developer community didn't have GitHub accounts).

And another thing - Slack has now last messages in #codecorner form June 15th? Where has all the discussion gone :D

Hi!

OSGeo incubation committee has been worried about activity levels in Oskari's community and that the communication is not that open (and this user-list has not been used a lot - one reason being that all the discussion is in Slack and between developers the other being that people haven't even registered here), so I started to think how the OTHERS are doing it :)

All communication should be diverted here and I'm working on it to bring this email-list more visible for Oskari users, but since email is email, we have also instant messaging services.

I noticed that GeoNode is using Gitter instead of Slack for instant messaging and this is open for all - have we had any discussion about Gitter-use? Have you used it? Should we use it? https://gitter.im/

It says in Gitter pages that:
"Let your community be discovered! With Gitter, everyone can find your community in our directory and via search engines."

The problem with Slack is that it is not open as such, although we are not preventing anybody to join in.

This was just a thought, please fill me in if there is some obstacles in this thought line :)
