quick few comments
- ogc has wps standard for online processing. have looked at before and its very interesting. look at pywps & 52 north. last i checked geoserver had a plugin for wps?
- i would also look into wcs for providing raw data to be passed to wps
- for distributed processing like grid etc there are standards but cant think of acroymns

could you speak abit more to the type of data and processing? if its sensor type data there's the whole ogc swe suite (sos etc)
