Cartographer

This is a hands-on position. Your mission (should you choose to accept
it) is to learn the open source components of the OpenGeo Suite and
leverage your experience with other mapping tools to design compelling
and dynamic web-based maps. This requires moving easily from macro to
micro—architect the geographic narrative and finesse (perhaps obsess)
over it at a pixel level.

If you are a person with a good interactive design sensibility, a
strong geospatial background, and an eye for making things better, and
you’re looking for a job where your work can impact on the future of
mapping, then this is the job for you.
Initial work responsibilities:

    * Work closely with the OpenGeo team to understand OpenStreetMap
data structure and styling requirements.
    * Execute map designs using GeoServer’s markup language Styled
Layer Descriptor (SLD).
    * Synthesize feedback from multiple sources to rapidly iterate on designs.
    * Document style guidelines and best practices for designing maps
styles based on OpenStreetMap data.

Applicants will have an online portfolio of beautiful maps. Ideally,
you’ll also have experience with OpenStreetMap and GeoServer as well
as demonstrated code abilities.
Additional qualifications include:

    * Solid background in geospatial technologies or related field.
    * Experience in designing web-based maps.
    * Excellent attention to detail and knowledge of design best practices.
    * Strong, clean visual design sense.
    * Excellent leadership, communication and teamwork skills.
    * Interest to open source software and communities.

This is a 6-week contract job located in New York City with the
possibility for full-time hire.
We Offer

We offer an exciting work environment full of interesting problems,
awesome people and a breathtaking view of New York City. You’ll work
on projects that push the boundaries of mapping and see the light of
day. Most importantly, your designs will help us build software that
challenges the status quo.
To Apply

Send your resume, cover letter, and a writing sample to
jobs opengeo.org. Let us know why you’re interested in working for
OpenGeo. Recent grads should include a GPA.
