A friend sent me a link to <a href="http://devolia.org/projects/devolia_geo.html">the open source project Devolia Geo, a RPC service providing geolocation</a>.
RPC stands for <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Remote_Procedure_Call">remote procedure call</a> which is "<i>[...] an Inter-process communication technology that allows a computer program to cause a subroutine or procedure to execute in another address space (commonly on another computer on a shared network) without the programmer explicitly coding the details for this remote interaction.</i>"
>From the Deviola site: "<i>Devolia Geo is a RPC (Remote Procedure Call) service providing geolocation (i.e. the service returns the closest city and country names from latitude and longitude).</i>"
