o jQuery e' uma boa "caixa de ferrramentas" para lidar com o HTML e
Javascript, o mapquery e' so um extra que ajuda na integracao do
OpenLayers no jQuery, mas as funcionalidades do mapsquery sao
relativamente reduzidas. Eu pessoalmente adoro jQuery ja que e'
bastante simples de usar e com muitas funcionalidades.<br>
<br>
Para projectos de media envergadura o jQuery ajuda bastante, mas
para um projecto de maiores dimensoes o melhor sera usar GeoExt [1],
ve a seccao de exemplos.<br>
<br>
Se precisares uma coisa integrada o melhor e' usar um framework como
mapfish que integra o cliente e a funcionalidades do server. <br>
<br>
Eu aconselho a consultares a tese de mestrado do Pedro Cabral "<span
lang="PT">Sigla WEBGIS portal: an open source Web-based GIS
application for the portuguese bluetongue Entomologiacal
surveillance program</span>" [2] esta um must !!! E ficas com uma
ideia o tipo de funcionalidades que o mapfish/geoExt pode ter.<br>

programacao de events em javascript puro, normalmente tento usar
