I also think it's a good idea.  I was thinking something similar myself.

Except I don't think your naming convention works.  If /docs is an alias 
for /docs/1.3, then /docs/1.4 would expand to /docs/1.3/1.4.  I think we 
would have to either use a different folder structure (like 
/docs_static/1.3) or put a redirect page at /docs/index.html (perhaps 
something along the lines of http://www.postgresql.org/docs/).

I'm not aware of any hidden build-results file.  Though that would be a 
good thing to have.
