Olivier,

I tried this on my windows install and my OpenSUSE 10.3 install and
works okay on those, so just seems to be an issue on my OpenSUSE 11 box
which is running a newer beta GCC. I'll give your debug suggestions a
try and see if I can make sense of why its happening.

Which GCC did you compile with by the way?

My OpenSUSE 10.3 is running
"PostgreSQL 8.4devel on i686-pc-linux-gnu, compiled by GCC gcc (GCC)
3.4.6 20060404 (Red Hat 3.4.6-10)"  "POSTGIS="1.4.0SVN"
GEOS="3.1.0-CAPI-1.5.0" PROJ="Rel. 4.6.0, 21 Dec 2007" USE_STATS"
(so it has an old gcc but then it has a newer PostgreSQL. ).

My Windows is running

"PostgreSQL 8.3.1, compiled by Visual C++ build 1400"
"POSTGIS="1.4.0SVN" GEOS="3.1.0-CAPI-1.5.0" PROJ="Rel. 4.6.1, 21 August
2008" USE_STATS"
(my mingW gcc I compiled PostGIS with iis gcc.exe (GCC) 3.4.5 (mingw
special))
