 Actually what I was thinking is you could use the window ROW_NUMBER()
 function to simulate contiguous rids for the range.  Does that work (or
 maybe I don't understand the problem).

 That would mean getting rid of support for PostgreSQL 8.3 (at least for
 rasters) which we are planning to do for PostGIS 2.0 anyway.
