 It'd take some profiling to really tell speed differences.
 But surely it's much easier to disable the short-cut than to do whatever
 we proposed so far. If not else it'd give us the opportunity to put
 something in the regression testsuite for this bug, so it's easier to
 optimize later w/out breaking it again.
