The main difficultly in writing something independent and then trying to integrate it is that you'll have to define data structures to solve your problem and many of them may be duplicated in the postgis code. This makes the final integration step more work than one might like.<br>

The best interest sol'n, IMO, is to build with (and within) liblwgeom, ignoring the database piece entirely. You can get something up and running there in pure C, put your tests in CUnit, and debug there, and once everything is complete binding into the database itself is relatively trivial.<br>
