Comment(by robe):

 Is this issue still valid in 2.1 and 2.2.  If it is I would suggest just
 pushing it and not bothering making changes to 2.0.  The api has changed
 enough between 2.0 and 2.1 to make supporting performance enhancements in
 2.0 annoying.
