[postgis-users] Fatal: lock file file "/usr/share/postgresql/data/postmaster.pid" already exists

I am having a problem intitalizing the postgresql
database.
Could please send any suggestion that you may have, so
i can move on to installing GT3.Thank you.

This is my error:

$ initdb -D /usr/share/postgresql/data
The files belonging to this database system will be
owned by user "Thompson".
This user must also own the server process.

The database cluster will be initialized with locale
C.
