If it can be coupled with ogr2ogr you should be able to manage & store your
spatial data and extract mapinfo/shape/etc.... as required.

I've set an Antarctic spatial database up with PostGIS & QGIS, with ogr as
the extract/reformat tool, but mezogis looks to be useful.
