A job vacancy for a specialist in spatial databases is currently posted at http://ies.jrc.ec.europa.eu/uploads/fileadmin/call-for-grantholders-docs/301045.pdf . This is a 3 year post-Doctoral position, meaning to be eligible you will need either a PhD, or a degree plus at least 5 years experience.

The MONDE Action of the Global Environment Monitoring Unit undertakes research on sustainable management of natural resources in Africa, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Countries in line with the development of EU policy. One of the key initiatives of MONDE is to set up a Digital Observatory of Protected Areas in the ACP Region.
In the context of the project, the objective is to develop and maintain an advanced information infrastructure that includes a multi-user spatial database, catalogue, web services and interactions with external stakeholders. Information content covers a broad range of environmental themes (land cover, climate, vegetation, topography, species, habitats), with a mix of earth observation, in-situ survey and map data. The focus will be on practical implementation of advanced spatial database technology as the basis to manage this information and to develop an expanding suite of interoperable web services for mapping, download and geoprocessing, compliant with international initiatives such as INSPIRE/GEOSS.
The ideal candidate should have a PhD in geographic information science, informatics or a related field (or a University degree and 5 years of research experience after the university degree giving access to doctoral studies).
Experience in the field of spatial database management is required. Knowledge of interoperability of spatial data and related issues is essential. Good knowledge of specific computing environments (PostGreSQL/PostGIS, GeoNetwork, MapServer, GeoServer, ArcGIS, Python), and recognised geospatial and related IT standards (INSPIRE/GEOSS, ISO, OGC, SQL, W3C), is an asset.
Good knowledge of spoken and written English is required. The knowledge of another community language would be an advantage.
Relevant publications and presentations should be highlighted, including any relevant technical documentation
The Joint Research Centre is an equal opportunity employer and is committed to increasing the diversity of its staff. It welcomes nominations of and applications from women and minority groups.

The job will be based in the Global Environment Monitoring Unit (GEM) of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), with an emphasis on the use of PostGIS as a datastore for a wide variety of natural resource data. GEM is located at the site of the JRC in Ispra, Northern Italy.
