Mono";color:#A31515">TOWGS84[0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0]</span>
field in the WKT w/ the geoid grid. I’m guessing that ties the
grid to the datum/geogcs of the containing compound CRS?<br>

yes. That works also for me if there's no TOWGS84[], but then PROJ
will issue a more complicated pipeline doing a non-null horizontal
datum shift from NAD83(CSRS) to WGS 84, since (without PR3216/3217),
it assumes that the vertical grid is referenced to WGS 84.<br>
