I would like to help with this manual release - my last efforts were
restricted to fixing a few typos as I had problems committing changes
until the work was nearly done.

I guess we should start with getting 1.6 up and running and I have had a
problem with the build here. I downloaded sources from "trunk" and got 70%
through the make process and then got the following error report :
