YES! that helped (both on my laptop and on the server), thanks :-)

@alex: I think this is ok isn't it:

So we can create russian pdf now ok too. I will also adjust scripts for
1.8 manual.

Mmm, only the japanese one is failing currently (on QGIS-server).
Nobody building japanese pdf's on debian wheezy?
