Are you working with the trunk or a precompiled binary version (0.11 or 
< )? Now paletted images, like the alaska tif, should open as 
SingleBandGray  with Colormap on initial load.

This should be all taken care of now ( r9284 ) Additionally, it will 
sort the table and reload on apply so that any invalid value entries 
(characters) will be cleared and set to 0.0 and float to the top of the 
table.
