[Qgis-developer] building & displaying pyramids

Hi, 

I have a question regarding pyramids
I have a map of type geoTiff & I used qgsRasterLayer class to display it in a window,
now i want to build pyramids and display them instead of a single map. 
Anyone have an idea of how to do that?!! Which class in which library I have to use?
