[Qgis-developer] terminate long running (freezed) processes?

Hi devs,
it happens that luanching some heavy processes from plugins (e.g. for data
processing) can block QGis for a long time. Sometimes the process freezes,
sometimes there was a problem in settings things, and the unavoidable
action is killing QGis.
I know it should be the responsability of the plugins developer to manage
these situations (e.g. starting a new thread to do long running processes),
but would it be possible to have the plugins run on a separated thread and
provide a "kill it!" button in QGis? The modal dialogs do not permit to
interact with QGis when a plugin use them, so I don't know if it's
technically feasible in these cases...
