My idea was to replace (or complement) the max value button with a 
checkbox. If you check the box, the field gets grayed out and synced to 
the max value, whenever
* in case of histogram: the attribute list changes
* in case of circular diagrams: the scale field changes

This way, a user action is required to transfer the control of this 
field from user responsibility to software responsibility and the 
current state is communicated transparently.
