Steve Halasz maintains the debian/ packaging stuff - I just wrote the build package script. I actually use ubuntu so my copy of the debian/ dir is slightly forked to cope with different versions of gdal etc. Regarding the gridmaker error I'm not sure why you are getting that. Perhaps Steve has some ideas - Steve?
