I agree Martin,<div>but I would hope that (at least) some of the major bugs reported for 1.7/1.7.1 will be solved before a new release.</div><div>The risk is to provide new features, but loosing stability for the ones users are used to.</div>

looking at the amount of time (~6 months) and commits (~900) since the<br>
1.7 release I am wondering whether it would not be reasonable to make<br>
also 1.8 release. Originally we wanted 1.7 to be the last 1.x feature<br>
release, however the master branch is in a good shape and no API<br>
breakage happened until now. Once we will start breaking things it<br>
will take some time (e.g. 6-9 months) until we will be able to release<br>
2.0 and it would be a shame not to deliver the recent goodies for such<br>
a long time.<br>

This is an incomplete list of main new features in master branch since 1.7:<br>
- globe plugin<br>
- road graph plugin<br>
- zonal stats plugin<br>
- browser (dock widget + standalone app)<br>
- customization<br>
- lots of server updates<br>
- symbology: ellipses with data-defined fields, line patterns, point patterns<br>
- 64-bit feature ids<br>
- expressions instead of search strings<br>
- generic import layer<br>
- plenty of bugfixes and small improvements<br>

If there is a consensus I guess the release could happen soon,<br>
sometime in mid-November.<br>
