So I started playing with this even more and didn't realize some
image services were hidden (thanks Bernd)....and I just made a map
with a Google Satellite background and it's not shifted. <br>
<br>
My only other contribution to the discussion would be to clear up
why those services are hidden as you wouldn't want to replace one
well known plugin with something that could cause people headaches.
I'm completely lost on that side of life. I've never completely
understood how openLayers could access Google imagery since
everything seems to require some developer 'magic'. I always limited
my use of it because I didn't understand legally why it worked. <br>

I think Basemaps would be a good alternate name for this - since
that's the entire plugin's 'reason for being' - providing basemaps.

I got caught on that one.
In QuickMapServices>Settings there is a "Contributed Services" tile.
Select "Get Contributed Services" and a whole lot of stuff, including
Bing and Google are provided.
To me QMS makes "Open layers" obsolete - but it needs a bit more
documentation on how to get Bing etc!!!
On principle I am against retirement, but am not aware of a strong
argument against it for Open Layers. (Something I have used and valued
for quite some time..)

I think deprecation and removal would be good, but for a
tangential reason: the name conflicts with OpenLayers the web
mapping library. A trivial reason at best, but probably irritating
to many, and potentially confusing to users.
