The<br />interval-based refresh is a better way of controlling refresh rate: it<br />has consistent behavior (few complex features do not block refresh),<br />it is not limited to just vector layers, and the number is easier to<br />understand/tweak. The old option did not really do any extra<br />performance tricks - simply increasing the number did fewer refreshes<br />(less extra work), so the overall rendering time shrunk.
