We could just ship QGIS with a different default configuration:<br>

what would the "single add data button" do? open a browser window?
that would be pretty easy.<br>

regardless of this discussion, I like the ideas of:<br>

* fixing (or creating a list of) things that are missing from the
browser<br>
* unifying the dialogs for adding layers<br>
