<p>Hi all,</p>
<p>Actually, this issue already came up many years ago, at the 6th QGIS developer meeting in 2011 in Zurich. I remember that the host of this meeting, Prof. Lorenz Hurni, asked us explicitly to change the name of the meeting from "hackfest" to "developer meeting". He was afraid, that the directors of the University wouldn't accept the meeting otherwise.</p>
<p>As far as I remember, the past PSC decided to change the name to "developer meeting" back then. However, the name "hackfest" was hard to get rid off - and many people (incl. many on the PSC) still used the old term "hackfest". I guess there is nothing wrong with using the old term on IRC, etc. - but the web pages and any written communication around the dev meetings shouldn't use the term "hackfest" any more.</p>
<p>It is just a matter of the concerned people to accept the past decisions and live them.</p>

<div dir="ltr">Dear PSC, dear Otto
<div> </div>
<div>I just wanted to ask a bit of attention on the naming of the QGIS developer meetings aka Hackfest.</div>
<div>While Hackfest sounds nice to geeks and even if it is not the same word as hacking, many people do confuse them. And not all of them read the small disclaimer saying they are not the same thing.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>In my experience as working for a public administration, the final authorization to go there is given by politics. I had some "troubles" last time due to that denomination.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>I think it might also be easier for any organization to sponsor (I mean financial sponsor) a developer meeting rather than a Hackfest.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>While it is really ok and cool to use Hackfest while speaking and chatting, I would recommend (or even ask) not to use it in any wiki page or official communication.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Does it make sense to you?</div>
<div> </div>
<div>In any case, thank for the work and of course for the organization of these superbs hackfests ;)</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Cheers,</div>

<div> </div>
<div>PS: I took the liberty to change wiki page for Essen to use "Developer meeting" rather then "Hackfest" and I hope you're fine with it.</div>
