<div dir="ltr">Hi Niall<div><br></div><div><br></div><div>It's an interesting idea but I am pretty -1 on it for these reasons:</div><div><br></div><div>* Singling out specific people out as 'stars' in a small community is inevitably going to ruffle feathers as inevitably some will feel overlooked. It was actually one of the background themes of discussion in Essen - ruffled feathers and how to maintain a sense of harmony within the project. I'd like to avoid doing things that can be potentially divisive and focus on things that get / keep us working harmoniously as a community.</div><div>* It is going to add more admin - all the changes we have been doing moving to a Verein and figuring out processes for voting members etc. has already added a lot of admin overhead to the project - hopefully these will fade back to tolerable levels once we get into the routine of it, but for now I think there are other high value things we could be doing admin-wise for the project.</div><div>* It would probably be nicer to try to revive the idea of monthly community member interviews (proposed once by Andreas) for the blog to spotlight the different activities and personas behind the project - although again this requires some effort to sustain.<br></div><div><br></div><div>@Andreas the intent behind the honorary members was that it would be used very occasionally over the life of the project and (in the context of honorary board or PSC members) - I think we should add a specific clause to include honorary voting members if we want to go that route.</div><div><br></div><div>Regards</div><div><br></div><div>Tim</div><div><br></div><div><br></div></div><div class="gmail_extra"><br><div class="gmail_quote">On Mon, May 29, 2017 at 4:14 PM, Neumann, Andreas <span dir="ltr"><<a href="mailto:a.neumann@carto.net" target="_blank">a.neumann@carto.net</a>></span> wrote:<br><blockquote class="gmail_quote" style="margin:0 0 0 .8ex;border-left:1px #ccc solid;padding-left:1ex"><div style="font-size:10pt;font-family:Verdana,Geneva,sans-serif">
<p>Hi Nyall,</p>
<p>Thanks for raising this. We can discuss it at our next meeting.</p>
<p>In the <a href="http://QGIS.ORG" target="_blank">QGIS.ORG</a> charter we have the concepts of an "honorary member" and an "honorary PSC member". Maybe this can be re-used for such a "community award"?</p>
<p>I'd have a hard time picking the person that deserves such an award the most - though. There are several community members (incl. devs) who contribute an awful lot. But that wouldn't be an obstacle for such an award ...</p>
<p>Greetings,</p>

I'd love to see us have some way of formally acknowledging<br> these community members who've gone "above and beyond expectations"<br> with their contributions to QGIS.<br><br> (Just to clarify - I'm not equating community members to developers<br> here, I'm referring to the entire community of PSC/documenters/bug<br> reporters/user group & event organisers/local promoters/etc... No<br> limits!)<br><br> Osgeo has the Sol Katz Award (<a href="http://www.osgeo.org/solkatz" target="_blank">http://www.osgeo.org/solkatz</a>) for wider<br> contributions to GFOSS. I think we could take the same model and have<br> a QGIS-specific award, which is presented at the annual user<br> conference.<br><br> I'd see this as a way we can celebrate the fact that QGIS is very much<br> a community driven project, and as a way of bringing the huge "behind<br> the scenes" contributions which community members have made to the<br> attention of the wider QGIS userbase. It'd be both a good way of<br> thanking these contributors and also giving us a marketing opportunity<br> to encourage new contributors into the community.<br><br> (Potentially we could also have a second award for contributing<br> organisations too, but that's a different topic...)<br><br><br> Nyall<br> ______________________________<wbr>_________________<br> Qgis-psc mailing list<br><a href="mailto:Qgis-psc@lists.osgeo.org" target="_blank">Qgis-psc@lists.osgeo.org</a><br><a href="https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-psc" target="_blank">https://lists.osgeo.org/<wbr>mailman/listinfo/qgis-psc</a></div>
