 slight update:
  - on the fly reprojection seems to be the culprit of the huge wait to
 render after all
  - now I see the custom crs menu item and can add new ones. the first time
 I tried to edit the generated one my edits were lost after I pressed ok (I
 guess you can only add?). the second time I did the edits and went to
 click on add button but clicked on the star and it was blanked (tooltips
 would help there). The third time I successfully added a second custom CRS
 by hitting the save icon.
  - the EPSG file sets +datum=nzgd49 for NZMG <27200>, but no transform
 options. But in the loading of the shapefile WKT the +datum never arrives.
 ? (I'm not sure if the epsg file is consulted for that; there is no
 AUTHORITY:EPSG stuff in this .prj)
