Comment:

 Well, since OSX 10.4 is now in the unsupported state by Apple, and above
 reason, let's just say that for my OSX 10.4 QGIS binary distribution, you
 ''must'' have GRASS installed.  A source build is unaffected because it
 will have the same presence/absence of GRASS during compilation and after
 installation.
