[Qgis-user] QGIS and the copy&paste tools and shapefiles

Hi Marco,
I am using GQIS 0.8.0 - Preview 2. What I did:
1) open source shapefile
2) choose "select object"-tool, selected some features (in this case some points). Points are highlighted
3) from the layer-menu, choose new vector layer (point, shapefile, add a dummy column; I did look at all column definitions of the source shapefile
4) make this new theme active for editing (right click,"allow editing")
5) click "paste" - the former selected features are visible within the target theme
6) click stop editing. QGIS asks whether I would like to save this file, I click "YES". QGIS is closed, nothing saved.

Well, 6) made me wonder today, so I did the same as before, but instead of 3) above, I created exactly the same column names as the source shapefile. Doing this, I succeeded (I could save the new theme with the pasted-into entries). Great! However, it would be great, if one did not have to define the column names before creating the target shapefile, so that you could just select some entries and paste them directly into a new theme). This would be very handy (just like the corresponding functionality of the GRASS-toolbox, or like in ArcView 3.x, where you can select "Convert to shapefile").

Best regards,
Wolfgang
