What exactly did you do? I don't think any links between Grass and Gdal
are necessary. At least I just build and install gdal-gras plugin after
building and installing Grass and Gdal and all just works.

Definitely no need to re-build qgis to make it use gdal-grass plugin.

Qgis will support Grass format once

$ gdalinfo --formats | grep GRASS

prints

  GRASS (ro): GRASS Database Rasters (5.7+)
